Beautiful beaches backed by limestone cliffs, lively tourist resorts and quaint fishing villages and hours of sunshine have made the Algarve a popular area for holiday makers since the 1960s.
The central coast is where the main tourist hub is located, head west and you'll find a wild coastal area with deserted beaches, great surfing and nature in abundance. On the eastern Algarve, you'll find white washed villages, cork forests, olive groves and a gentler pace of life and inland you'll find such delights as the beautiful town of Monchique which affords the most beautiful views of the surrounding forest.
The Algarve is renowned for its excellent golf courses, so if you're a keen golfer you have to head to the Sir Henry Cotton Championship, one of the oldest and most famous golf courses in the area. If you're a history buff, head to Silves, a pretty inland town, brimming with historic buildings and the former Moorish stronghold on the Algarve. Enjoy a delicious seafood dish at one of the many harbour side restaurants you'll find dotted along the coast and simply relax and unwind on one of the many beautiful beaches this stretch of Portuguese coast is famous for.
