About the World Weightlifting Championships, Anaheim

Organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the World Weightlifting Championships bring together some of the strongest athletes in the world. There are 15 different categories, 8 for men and 7 for women. Competitors enter dependent on their size and bodyweight. The 2017 championships were originally to be held in Penang, Malaysia, but are now in California at the Anaheim Convention Center. The world records are within the 105kg plus category, by two Iranian weightlifters. Behdad Salimi lifted 216kg in the snatch lift, while the clean and jerk record of 263kg by Hossein Rezazadeh has remained unbroken since 2004.

The nearest airport to Anaheim is the John Wayne Airport which is 14 miles from the city centre. International flights are also available to Ontario and Los Angeles, which are between 30 and 35 miles away.  If flying into John Wayne Airport you can use the official John Wayne Shuttle Association, for a direct transfer to the conference centre. If you are keen weightlifter applying to take part, there are application forms online that need to be completed at least 3 months prior to the event. Spectators can attend the championships and will need to check online for tickets when available.

Making the most of the World Weightlifting Championships

The championships miss the height of the American summer as are held in November. California is known for great weather during September and October, so be mindful you may be unlucky and need to pack an extra layer. If you’re unfamiliar with weightlifting take note of the difference between events. Check the calendar of events to see which categories are happening when, the heavyweights often attract the bigger crowds. Look into tickets giving discount for multiple days. Previous events have had special access tickets available, premium seating for the best views and also the chance to see the athletes training.
