About the World Aquatics Championships, Budapest

The best athletes in swimming, diving and water polo arrive in Budapest for the World Aquatics Championships. The competitions are run by the International Swimming Federation FINA and held every two years. In Budapest, there will be two main indoor arenas within the city centre as well as on lakes Balaton and Danube. The indoor races and games take place in a 50-meter long pool, with diving boards from 27 metres. The events also include a gruelling outdoors arena, with competitors swimming up to 25km in the open waters. First hosted in 1973, the World Aquatics Championships have been dominated by the USA, winning twice as many medals as their nearest challengers in China.

The main airport in the capital of Budapest is the Ferenc Liszt International Airport, often referred to as Ferihegy. There is a metro line into the city centre that operates until 11pm, or a night bus for late arrivals. There are street markets during the championships that are free, while tickets will need to be purchased for entry into the Aquatics Arena and other venues. Opening times vary depending on the times of events taking place. The music fountain on Margaret Island however is open from 11am to 22pm throughout the competition.

Making the most of the World Aquatics Championships, Budapest

Check the schedule listing when available and plan your journey ahead of the championships, based on which competitions you wish to attend.  It is recommended to arrive at least 30-minutes ahead of start times. Under 5’s are welcome, to encourage families to attend and given free entry without prior booking, although seating is not guaranteed. When purchasing valid tickets to the championships, visitors receive complimentary use of the MAHART riverboats. Although held during the Hungarian summer, there is often a chance of rain so bring a jacket, especially when attending the outdoor swimming.
