The X Games has provided some amazing exhibitions and competitions, making the likes of skateboarding legend Tony Hawks a household name. Since 2002 the original tournament has seen the introduction of a winter version at Colorado become increasingly more popular, where skiers and snowboarders compete with dare devil stunts and acrobatics. Based up in the mountains of the Aspen Resort, the Winter X Games attracts fans from all over the world with its highest attendance reaching 83,500 spectators. The nearest main airport is Denver International which is a four-hour drive to reach the games. You can however reach the games within a short walk from Aspen County Airport, transfers are available by air via Denver, Los Angeles and Chicago. The games themselves are free and open to the public, however tickets to include other packages vary in price. You can purchase ski passes between $55 and $87, live music ranges from $35 to $60 while two all-inclusive packages are available at $1,799 and between $300 to $600. The games start Thursday lunchtime and all day Friday, with majority of finals spread over the Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
With the games held up in the mountains, it goes without saying to ensure you pack appropriately for the cold weather. If you are staying out of the main resort area, then be prepared for a long drive but take time to enjoy the spectacular views. It’s one for all the family, although music event may have age restrictions.
