Formerly known as the Mayor’s Thames Festival, the revamped Totally Thames 2017 is a large-scale series of cultural, sporting and artistic events taking place on and around London’s River Thames during the month of September. Thanks to the varied programme, the 42-mile stretch of waterway comes alive with boat races, art installations, regattas and community events which means there’s always something going on around London’s main aquatic thoroughfare. There are plenty of free events to enjoy, such as the epic Great River Race - a battle down the Thames between competitors in traditional boats. You’re sure to find plenty to entertain you during this month-long city festival.
The Totally Thames 2017 festival features a wide variety of events which take place all along the length of this major river. As such, the best way to keep up to date with the what’s going on and where is to keep a regular eye on the festival’s official website here or sign up to the newsletter for regular updates. If you’re flying in for the festival, all of the London airports have great connections to the city centre, so you can choose any of Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend or City.
There are sure to be many highlights of this year’s festival so please book early for those events which require tickets. One of last year’s most memorable events was the spectacular floating lantern created by artist Ik-Joong Kang. The three-storey-high installation, Floating Dreams, was a poignant tribute to those who were displaced during the Korean War. Another recommended activity, which is likely to be brought back for 2017, is the guided tour around London’s houseboats. With around 1,000 people living in boats on the Thames, this illuminating look at a new way of life may well make you consider swapping to a life on the river!
