The Stars Route is an annual gastronomic festival taking place across six Michelin-starred restaurants in Portugal. Madeira’s contribution to this esteemed event is the renowned ‘Il Gallo d’Oro’ situated at The Cliff Bay Hotel in Funchal. The week-long festival brings some of the world’s best chefs to the hotel, working together to create unique menus for you to sample. The focus is on using ingredients and flavours from the local area to showcase the taste of Portugal. As well as enjoying cuisine prepared by the world’s most distinguished chefs, there’ll be plenty of musical entertainment as well as exclusive workshops where you can learn the chefs’ culinary secrets.
The Madeira leg of the Stars Route takes place The Cliff Bay Hotel in February 2017. The fun starts on the first night with cooking demonstrations and continues throughout the week with workshops on Portuguese cheeses, tastings and visits to some of the island’s most unique spots. You can have a look at the full programme of events at the official website. Prices for the workshops start at €140 with the festival highlight of the six-course meal prepared by the chefs costing around €160. If you’d like to attend the event, the nearest airport is Madeira International Airport, just 8 kilometres from the capital city of Funchal.
One of the most memorable aspects of the Stars Route itinerary is the sheer variety of its activities. The festival combines top cuisine with trips to the island’s natural delights. One of the regular activities is ‘Journey to the Centre of the Island’ where you’ll be taken on a tour right into the São Vicente volcanic caves with lunch being served after the tour. Also available is a catamaran tour around the island with a DJ playing chillout music and the main highlight being a sumptuous lunch to enjoy while enjoying the beautiful views.
