Take part in the extreme race across the countryside of Innerleithen town, just outside Edinburgh. The Mighty Deerstalker is run at night, over a distance that is deliberately vague, initially thought to be a 10km course it is in fact over 14. Run through muddy fields, wade into the icy river, climb mountains and venture across the rough terrain before finishing on a huge water slide. This is believed to be one of the most gruelling night races in the UK and one not for the faint hearted. The organisers of the event, Rat Race, specialise in endurance races and adventure runs across the country.
You can reach Innerleithen via Edinburgh and a 40-minute bus ride. If you are flying into the city, Edinburgh has its own international airport, it then takes half an hour by bus into the heart of the city centre. Prices vary depending on when you book, ranging from £40 early bird through to £65 for solo entries. You can enter in teams of 5 to 9 or 10 to 19, ranging from £36 to £62 per person. These include entrance to the huge end of race party. Guests are aloud to the party for an additional £5 to £10. Onsite parking is available, again between £5 and £10.
The earlier you book the cheaper the price, although entrants are accepted up until the night before the event. Only take part if you’re confident you can tackle the course and conditions, it’s not for those of a nervous disposition or with health conditions. Train hard in order to prepare, try smaller events in your local area before booking. When competing wear sensible clothes and appropriate footwear for the rough terrain. You will need to bring a head torch and a GPS watch is recommended. Make sure you stay for the party, bring a change of clothes, invite your friends and have fun.
