Now being held for its 36th year, the Great Christmas Pudding Race is a popular charity event in Covent Garden which features competitors in fancy dress costumes racing across a giant obstacle course. Each year a new course is unveiled with various obstacles for your team members to scale, all the while balancing a Christmas pudding on a tray! The streets are lined with spectators cheering on teams of Santas, reindeer and giant superheroes, all racing to the finishing line in aid of charity. There will be musical performances and zumba demonstrations for even further entertainment. All proceeds from this madcap event go to Cancer Research UK.
The Great Christmas Pudding Race takes place in The Apple Market in Covent Garden every December. It’s organised by the Cancer Research Aid Committee and all proceeds go to Cancer Research UK. To enter, you should aim to raise around £600 in total for your team of six. You can find out all the entry and registration information here. The warm-up and entertainment starts at 11.15am and the first obstacle race kicks off at 12.10pm. To get to Covent Garden from anywhere in London, use Transport for London’s handy Journey Planner or CycleStreets if you’re travelling by bike.
This crazy event has welcomed a number of celebrities to carry the Christmas Pudding over its 36 years, including the cast of Eastenders, Bonnie Langford and Bill Oddie. Although it’s great fun to watch herds of Santas, elves and teddybears careering down an inflatable giant slide whilst bravely attempting to balance a Christmas pudding on a tray, everyone should take active part in at least one charity event per year. This is undoubtedly one of the quirkiest and most fun out there so grab five friends, head to the website and register!
