The Southampton Beer Festival is an annual beer and cider festival run by the Hampshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale. You’ll find a large range of local and international ales on offer during this three-day event in the city’s Guildhall. Serving up thousands of pints of ale from the world’s best breweries, the festival always welcomes large crowds but manages to retain a warm community feel. The traditional pub games and live music mean there’s always a jovial atmosphere. The main focus, however, is firmly on the beer and you’ll find strictly limited edition as well as famous ales served up from brewers stretching from America to the Czech Republic. With a large range of beverages available, from cider to real ale, you’re guaranteed to find your drink of choice.
The three-day show is usually open from 11.30am to 11pm but be sure to check the official website near the festival dates for the final opening times. To get to the venue which is in Southampton’s Guildhall, head to Southampton’s Central Station, walk uphill towards the Civic Centre to the right of the clock tower and you’ll find the festival entrance on Guildhall Square on West Marlands Road. You can check out all the travel options, including local buses, using the handy Traveline South West Journey Planner. Ticket prices vary depending on the live entertainment playing on the night and the session you attend. You can buy advance tickets online from the official festival website.
Children and young adults are permitted to attend the event but must stay in the designated family area, accompanied by an adult, at all times. The beer festival is a great opportunity to try out some new types of beer and its organisers, CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) place great importance on providing the very best quality cask conditioned real ale - so make sure you give it a try!
