Singapore celebrates its National Day every year on 9th August, commemorating its independence from Malaysia in 1965. As well as an impressive National Day Parade which takes place on the city state’s Marina Bay Floating Platform, the celebrations are renowned for the incredible firework displays that are the finale to this popular public holiday. Lighting up the famous city skyline, the fireworks are one of the highlights of National Day. Last year’s celebration included indoor fireworks for the first time, bringing the audience even closer to all the pyrotechnic action, with a lengthy display taking place within the city’s National Stadium following the parade.
If you’d like to come to Singapore to experience all the excitement of the National Day fireworks, you’ll be treated to some of the world’s best free pyrotechnic displays. The action takes place at the Marina Bay Floating Platform from around 8pm this year but you’ll be able to see the amazing display from several places around the city. Our tip is to head to The Promontory at Marina Bay where you can really enjoy the fireworks lighting up the amazing city view from this high point. If you’re flying in to enjoy the celebrations, your nearest international airport to all the action is Singapore Changi Airport which operates several flights to and from the UK.
If you’re coming to Singapore to catch some of the world’s best fireworks, make sure you immerse yourself in the National Parade too. If you know someone in Singapore, see if they can get you a ticket to this sought-after event. Attendance at the parade is in such high demand that tickets can no longer be bought but citizens have to enter a ballot and hope that their number comes up. Each permanent resident is able to secure six tickets. The parade features military marching bands, floats and rousing performances of national songs such as ‘Stand Up for Singapore’ and ‘We Are Singapore’.
