About Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

One of the world’s largest carnivals, locals and tourists alike take to the streets of Tenerife in a colourful celebration of life. Appropriately twinned with carnival specialists Rio de Janeiro, Santa Cruz brings together over a hundred musical bands during its opening parade which sees thousands of costumed revellers dancing the night away until the early hours. Traditional activities such as the crowning of the Gala Queen and the musical competitions are televised across the nation and are usually sold out. The entire Carnival Saturday is given over to dance, whether that’s to traditional Latin songs or contemporary electronic music - all is catered for in this huge annual celebration.

A key element is the comparsas, or huge bands all playing traditional carnival conga music, providing the rhythmic backbone to the celebrations. The carnival is also known for its murgas, a unique theatrical play set to music, usually making fun of key topical issues of the day. And don’t forget the traditional rondalla, a collection of musicians playing stringed instruments and performing public serenades.
