Every year the best of Scotland’s farmers attend the Royal Highland Show, attracting thousands of visits at the annual event. As well as farms showcasing their livestock, there will be exhibitions on agricultural machinery, competitions such as sheep shearing and horse jumping, as well as falconry displays and other entertainment. The first show took place in 1822, moving location from year to year. Now taking place at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh, over 5000 animals are on site during the show. Queen Elizabeth II has attended on several occasions.

The Royal Highland Show is only half an hour away from the city centre. From here you can either drive or there are plenty of buses available from the train station and elsewhere in the city. Edinburgh has its own International Airport, which is next to the Royal Highland Centre. Opening hours are from 7.30am to 8pm, Thursday to Saturday and 7.30am to 6pm on the Sunday. Tickets cost £22 per day, £19 for students and the over 60s. Under 16s go for free. Parking is available for those driving at £8 a car, although using public transport is encouraged to avoid congestion.

Making the most of Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh

Book tickets online to cut down on the queues when arriving on the day. The programme of events tends to be the same each day, so Thursday and Friday are likely to be slightly quieter. Still check times for anything such as competitions or award presentations. There are plenty of family orientated events, so make the most of children going for free. Ensure you take the little ones to the Children’s Discovery Centre. The event is outside and on farmland so be prepared for lots of walking. If you need to take a seat, there will be a grandstand erected near the main show arena.
