Romes Birthday

21st April 2018 | Rome, Italy

About Rome’s Birthday

Rome is surrounded by history and embraces its past, as wells as the myths and legends that has become part of the city. Not every city has a holiday dedicated to its origins, so what better time to visit and join in the celebrations? Legend has it that the city was born when the twins Romulus and Remus, who were brought up by wolves, fought over Palatine Hill and Aventine Hill, resulting in the death of Remus and the birth of Rome. While the story has been passed through the generations the city now celebrates its history with gladiator battles and lavish firework displays.

Helpful information about Rome’s Birthday

The nearest airports to Rome are Ciampino Airport and the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, are within easy access of the city centre. The majority of events take place at Capitoline Hill, home to Palazzo del Senator which has since become the city hall. While street parties and traditional feasts take place all over Rome, there are also parades and re-enactments in the square upon the hill that are free to watch. Elsewhere Aventine Hill is covered in torches and spectacular firework displays are set off over the Tiber River, again free for the public to view.

Making the most of Rome’s Birthday

The party is very much a family affair, although some celebrations head late into the night. There’s no need to book in advance, but the best places to stay are likely to be taken early and on the actual birthday, arrive in Capitoline Hill early to get the best view of the day’s entertainment. At the City Hall keep an eye out for the statue of the she-wolf, said to have brought up the twins Romulus and Remus. Also check local listings nearer the time for celebrations elsewhere in the city, Ancient Rome for example providing the perfect setting for more of those gladiator battles.
