Regata Storica

2nd September 2018 | Grand Canal, Venice, Italy

About the Regata Storica

The Regata Storica, or Historic Regatta, is an annual rowing event which has been taking place on Venice’s Grand Canal for hundreds of years. The most famous of all the regattas which take place in Venice each summer, of which there are over a hundred, this series of races takes the visitor back to the fifteenth century. Starting off with a colourful pageant on the waters with crew members wearing period costumes, the gondoliers recreate the transporting of the Doge and high-ranking Venetian members across the canal. Following the ceremony, it’s time for the highly competitive races to take centre stage. The most eagerly anticipated is the ‘Campioni su Gondolini’ which features a speedy flight of sporting gondolas battling for supremacy.

Helpful information about the Regata Storica

The Regata Storica usually takes place on the first Sunday in September on the Grand Canal in Venice. The event generally starts at around 4pm with a parade of the boats starting from St. Mark’s Bay, proceeding down the Grand Canal to the Santa Lucia train station and back up to Ca’ Foscari. The various races follow the ceremony. If you’d like to attend this incredible event in Venice, there is no better time to see the waters come alive. Fly into Venice’s Marco Polo Airport and either take the airport minibus service into the city centre or use one of the water-taxis or water buses to get you there. While you’re in the city, it may be worth investing in a City Pass which grants you discounted entry to various attractions and rides on public transport.

Making the most of the Regata Storica

The reason that the regatta is held is to honour Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who in 1489 renounced the Cypriot throne in order that Venice could gain control of Cyprus. Upon her return to Venice, she was given a hero’s welcome and the aim of the Regata Storica is to recreate that scene.
