Now in its 22nd year, Queer Lisboa 21 is the country’s leading LGBT film festival, specialising in films which deal with subjects relating to sexuality & gender identity. The largest gay film festival in Europe, the Queer Lisboa is an important event in the city’s cultural scene, incorporating workshops, installations, theatre, parties and street performances within its agenda. The programme features a wide variety of short films, documentaries and feature-length screenings, all vying to win the top prizes in their category. Last year’s winner of the Best Feature Film was Antes o Tempo Não Acabava by Sérgio Andrade and Fábio Baldo. If you’re a fan of Queer Cinema, make sure you put this film festival on your ‘must-do’ list for 2018! 

Helpful information about Queer Lisboa 21

The film screenings take place at both the Cinemateca Portguesa and the Cinema São Jorge on Avenida da Liberdade. The nearest metro station is Avenida on the Blue Line. The ticket office will be open daily from 1pm until 8pm most days. Tickets cost around €4 per screening or you can buy a pack of 5 tickets for a discounted price. If you’re flying in to Portugal’s historic capital via Lisbon International Airport, you can get into town by taking a 20-minute Aerobus ride to the Cais do Sodré main railway station. From there, you can access all of the city’s amenities.

Europe’s largest gay film festival means that Lisbon becomes a hotbed for the best parties in town. Already known as a great gay holiday destination, the city’s queer scene really takes off during the film festival.
