Each summer Torre dei Lago at Puccini’s birthplace of Lucca holds a festival over a two-month period to celebrate each Opera made the famous by the Italian composer. Giacomo Puccini became world renowned for his works on the popular production of La Boheme and the classic Madame Butterfly.  The festival has been running since the 1930’s and what better way to take in the live experience than where the great man was born? The outdoor arena is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Massaciuccoli lake, whilst the talented orchestras will provide musical a compliment to the lavish stage productions.

The nearest airport to Lucca in Tuscany is Pisa, which is only a half hour car or train journey or it is easy to get to from Florence.  The events start from €19.50 for seats at the back of the arena through to the best in the house at €159, seating elsewhere are offered at various mid-priced tickets.  There is no official online ordering system, but can be purchased via telephone, email or in person via the website. Performances start from 9.15pm and it is recommended to arrive in plenty of time as latecomers aren’t allowed in until the intervals.

Making the most of Puccini Festival, Tuscany

Be mindful this is an outdoor event, although it is in the heat of the Italian summer and there are dress codes in place.  Book your seat in advance, the 2nd and 3rd sectors offer the best mid-price viewing.  On collection remember to take ID.  Make the most of your stay and see all five operas.  If you’re not familiar with the storylines then read up in advance, or programmes are available on the night.   Arrive early enough to visit the Puccini Museum and find out more about the composer, or treat yourself by booking in for a buffet dinner (€25 each) ahead of the performance.
