Located in the very north of Portugal, the Ponte de Lima International Garden Festival regularly attracts over 100,000 visitors to its display of original and innovative gardens. During the summer, this small village turns into a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts who flock there to see the creative works of an international cast of landscape designers. Now in its 17th year, the theme for 2017 is ‘Garden of Discovery’ - one which is set to attract many participants in this annual competition. Last year’s ‘Garden of Knowledge’ theme saw such fascinating entries as ‘The Numbers Garden’ - a garden designed around mathematical concepts. Also on offer are workshops, art exhibitions and concerts to keep you entertained.
Ponte de Lima International Garden Festival takes place each year from May to October in the small village of Ponte de Lima in Northern Portugal. The opening hours vary according to month so it’s best to check the official website before you plan your trip to the festival. However, the general opening hours are from 10am to 7pm. The entry price is a real bargain at only €1 per adult for a one-time entry and €2 for a season pass. Children under the age of 12 enter for free.
In addition to admiring the beautiful gardens which have been specifically designed for this international competition, do plan your trip so that you have enough time to take in some of the sights of the festival location. Famous for being the country’s oldest village, this gorgeous spot is also renowned for its beauty and historic monuments such as St. Anthony’s Convent which was built in the 15th century. Also renowned for its red wines, known as Vinho Verde, which you should certainly try while you’re there, the village was historically an important stop on the main road between Braga and Santiago de Compostela.
