Scotland is famous for its traditional Great Highland Bagpipes, but once a year pipers from all over the world perform at Piping Live. There are a number of venues that take part across Glasgow for all things related to the historic wind instrument. As well as solo pipers and large bands, the event also includes folk music that feature pipes along with competitions and museum tours. There have been performances from as far afield as New Zealand, with other countries also bringing their traditional versions of the bagpipe. The history of the instrument can be traced as far back as 1000 years BC.

Glasgow airport is only 8 miles from the city centre. Glasgow Central Station will get you into the city centre on the train and once you have arrived the majority of venues are within walking distance. With a series of activities from bands performing for free in local parks through to ticketed concerts at the O2, prices vary depending on each event. Opening times will also vary, outdoor performances at Glasgow Green and George Square tend to be during the day, as are main events at the National Piping Centre. The piping competition will be held at the Convent Chapel, within St Aloysius College.

Unlike other festivals, not all the main events are in the evening so review what’s on and plan the festival best for you. If you are on a budget, or just passing through then there are plenty of free concerts. George Square is popular all year round, so take the family and listen to the piping as you relax in the park. Check what’s on at some of the cafés and bars for something a bit different, or book tickets to the O2 for any evening concerts. Visit the National Piping Centre during the day for lunchtime performances, but stay to look around the museum.
