The Palio di Siena is a horse race held twice a year in Siena, Italy. The race is held on July 2 and August 16. Ten riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours represent the city wards. The Palio held on 2 July is called the Palio de Provenzano in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano and the 16 August event is named Palio dell’Assunta in honour of the Assumption of Mary.
It is common for a few of the jockeys to be thrown off their horses while making the treacherous turns in the piazza.
