A popular annual event, London’s Open Garden Squares weekend is your chance to visit the capital’s secret gardens and private squares which are held under lock and key for the rest of the year. Involving approximately 200 gardens, the spaces are extremely diverse - from modern roof gardens to unique allotments to one of London’s most defining features, the garden square. As well as browsing through some of the city’s most beautiful secret spaces, you can take a guided tour around certain ones, buy plants, attend garden fêtes and enjoy open air concerts.
The two-day event takes place on the weekend of 9th and 10th June. Tickets are available in advance for £12 per person and on the day for £14 per person. You can buy your advance tickets online here and in person at the City Information Centre opposite St. Paul’s Cathedral. Most gardens are open between 10am and 5pm but it’s certainly worth checking their opening times before you head off. The official website provides a very handy Garden Selector which enables you to filter your choice of gardens by type (for example, the London Borough location, those allowing dogs, those with beehives, etc.) and returns results showing the gardens’ exact locations and opening times.
If you’re planning on attending the Open Garden Squares weekend, why not do so on two wheels? As the open gardens span the length and breadth of London, riding in a group is a great way to travel and visit with others. There are three cycle rides during the weekend: the first meets on Saturday at 10am for a 10.15 departure and will visit gardens in Hampstead, Regent’s Park and Bloomsbury. The Sunday ride starts at10am from St. Paul’s Cathedral and goes to gardens in East London and the City. The third ride is on Sunday at 9.30am from the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens and visits gardens in Kensington & Chelsea and South West London.
