The Olhão Seafood Festival is an annual seafood celebration which attracts thousands of visitors to this beautiful town in the Algarve. With the Ria Formosa lagoon as its backdrop, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal, you’ll be able to sample some of the most delicious shellfish that the country has to offer. For six days, the town’s seafront promenade, the Jardim Pescador Olhanense, is lined with vendors selling their local versions of grilled crab, shrimp, lobster, clams and cockles. This 14th edition of the festival additionally features a great line-up of national and local bands which will keep you dancing until two in the morning.
The six-day Olhão Seafood Festival takes place in the Algarve town’s Jardim Pescador Olhanense and starts at around 7.30pm each evening. The festival usually takes place during the second week of August and is open each day from around 7.30pm to 2am. You can buy tickets for the festival once you get there: prices range between €5 and €10 - the festival is a tad more expensive on days when top name bands are playing. It’s a small price to pay, though, to be able to soak up the live music, stalls selling traditional handmade goods and the summer party ambience. Getting to the festival couldn’t be easier: fly in to Faro International Airport and then take a 10-minute train ride to nearby Olhão.
Even if you only attend the festival for the seafood, it’s certainly worth hanging around to get a glimpse of the event’s live performers. You may not expect a food festival to pay such detailed attention to its musical line-up but Olhão is renowned for hosting some of the country’s top artists. Previous musicians have included the ‘king of kizomba’ himself, C4 Pedro, Portuguese rock legends Xutos & Pontapés and six-million album-selling fado artist Camané.
