The Carnival is a celebration of the capital's Caribbean communities, their culture and traditions, which has been taking place since 1964, featuring two days of fantastic live music ranging from reggae to dub to salsa. The celebrations also include soca floats, steel bands and a whole lot of jerk chicken and fried plantain.
The Carnival floats and bands set off in the morning on both Sunday and Monday. The Carnival celebrations take over the areas of Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park.
Elaborate floats and colourful costumed performers wind their way through the streets to the sound of steel bands and calypso music. Watch the carnival parade, join in the fun and visit the tempting food stalls at one of London's biggest events.
The best way to get there is to take the tube to the outskirts and join the masses in walking towards the parade route. The nearest tube stations without disruptions are Holland Park, High Street Kensington, Queen's Park, Shepherd's Bush, Bayswater and Paddington, while Notting Hill Gate, Royal Oak and Westbourne Park usually have amended operating times.
Ladies – word of warning: ditch those heels! You will be on your feet all day, so comfort is key. Think closed-toe flats (flip-flops will probably break and aren't the best for wading through rubbish at the end of the day). But don't forget: it is the carnival! Leave the pastels in the wardrobe and bring out the colour.
If you are planning to visit the Carnival in London, choose from rental apartments, houses, flats, studios and B&B’s close to the venue.
For getting about, aside from the tube - the Hop on Hop off bus service with over 60 stops on 4 different routes, will take you to best places like Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge and more! Departure point: You can join the tour from any of their 60 stops. Each of the stops is clearly signposted Golden Tours Hop on Hop Off/London Tour Bus.
However, a trip to the capital wouldn't be complete without seeing the Coca-Cola London Eye, historic Tower of London or the Sea life London Aquarium plus many more wonderful attractions.
