New Years Eve in Madrid

31st December 2017 - 1st January 2018 | Madrid, Spain

About New Year’s Eve in Madrid

New Year’s Eve, known as Nochevieja in Spain, is celebrated with grapes, cava and fireworks in the nation’s capital. Join the revellers in the main square, Puerta del Sol, from 11.30pm to be entertained by some of the city’s best live musicians and performers. Join in the countdown to midnight and experience the national tradition of eating grapes for good luck as the chimes ring out across the square. The festivities in Puerta del Sol are the country’s official celebration and are broadcast across Spain. Once the chimes have struck, head to one of Madrid’s many bars and clubs to celebrate the arrival of 2018 by dancing until dawn.

Helpful information about New Year’s Eve in Madrid

The New Year’s celebrations tend to kick off at around 11.30pm in Puerta del Sol. To get there, head to Sol Metro station or, as this is likely to be extremely busy, it may be quicker to take the tube to nearby Opera or Chueca and walk from there. Check out the tube map here. Unfortunately, the metro closes early on New Year’s Eve in Madrid so take this account when you’re planning your trip home. An alternative is to stay out all night and make the most of the city’s famous clubs, such as Teatro Kapital, New Garamond or Barco.

Making the most of New Year’s Eve in Madrid

If you’re ringing in the New Year in Madrid, make sure you buy your grapes for the chimes at midnight. This 19th century tradition of grape-eating started in the capital as a way of mocking the bourgeoisie’s custom of celebrating New Year with expensive champagne and grapes. This then turned into its own tradition and spread across Spain. The idea is to eat one grape per chime of the twelve bells at midnight - no easy feat! If you manage to do it, you’ll have good luck for the year ahead. The trick? Buy seedless grapes!
