Medieval Days is a large annual festival held at the end of August which celebrates medieval life in all its forms in a large 13th century castle. The town goes all out to step back in time to the era of knights, monks, noblemen and jesters with performers from around the world descending upon the town. One of the highlights is a great banquet within the castle walls during which ale and regional delicacies are served up and medieval music is played. There’s plenty to enjoy for all the family including jousting to get your heart racing and jesters to keep you and the kids laughing.
Medieval Days takes place in the Castro Marim, a town in the Algarve close to the border with Spain. The festival happens annually at the end of August and starts with a parade from the centre of the town up to the impressive Moorish castle. This period really is the best time to visit as it is the town’s most vibrant period, welcoming visitors from all over the world to its festival. If you’re planning to attend, fly into Faro International Airport. From Faro, enjoy the hour-long train journey through some stunning nature until you get to Vila Real Santo Antonio train station. A ten-minute bus ride from there will get you to Castro Marim.
Making the most of Medieval Days at Castro Marim
Castro Marim is the perfect place to hold a medieval fair given that it was the headquarters of the Order of the Knights Templar back in the fourteenth century. It also served as an important defensive stronghold in Roman times. Make sure you climb the walls and enjoy the amazing panoramic view of the surrounding area. Castro Marim sits on the border with Spain and you can see the Spanish town of Ayamonte in the distance as well as the marshes of the beautiful nature reserve nearby.
