The Marathon de Paris is one of the most important races on the European long-distance running circuit. It takes place through the very centre of the city, starting on the Champs-Elysées and finishing at Avenue Foch, taking in the Eiffel Tower, Place de la Bastille and the River Seine on the way. First run in 1976, last year’s marathon was won by Kenyans Cyprian Kotut, in the men’s race, and Visiline Jepkesho in the women’s event. Will they take up the challenge again this year against the other 57,000 runners expected to participate in the race through the City of Light?
Registrations are now open for the Paris marathon so if you’d like to take part, please head to the official registration page. The first early bird registration fee sold out in 90 minutes but there are still spaces available at the second level price of €99. Disabled competitors should register via Handisport. The race starts at 8.35am for disabled participants and at 8.45am for able-bodied runners. Note that, like all professional races in France, you’ll need a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are fit enough to run the race before you can pick up your race number.
While you have to be over 18 to compete in the main marathon, this doesn’t mean that kids can’t take part. If you have children who are between 5 and 10 years old, they can participate in one of the most famous parts of the adult course - running underneath the Eiffel Tower! There are two ‘races’ in the Haribo Marathoons event - one of 1.2km and the other of 2.2km. There will be fun activities to enjoy, live music and a medal for those who finish the race. Why not enrol your budding athletes in February and head to the Champ de Mars to watch them in their first mini-marathon!
