Madeira Uphill 2000

1st May 2018 - 31st May 2018 | Madeira, Portugal

About the Madeira Uphill 2000 (Dates to be confirmed)

Billed as Europe’s toughest half marathon, the Madeira Uphill 2000 event is a 22-kilometre race which is almost entirely uphill. Starting in the capital city of Funchal, the course winds around the island’s beautiful woodland and mountainous scenery in a permanent ascent until the end. You’ll be happy to reach the finishing line, not just because it will be an amazing achievement but also because it happens to be one of Madeira’s most beautiful lookout points. Scaling the 2,000-kilometre high peak of Pico do Areiro is the ultimate goal of the race - a feat not for the faint-hearted. If you’re not up to the full half marathon, there is also a 10-kilometre mini-marathon or you can run the half marathon as part of a four-stage relay.

Making the most of the Madeira Uphill 2000

The Uphill 2000 takes its name from the height of its finishing point, Pico do Arieiro, which stands just shy of 2,000 metres tall. The view from the top of Madeira Island’s third highest mountain is nothing short of spectacular with mountains, clouds and the sea all stretching out before you. If you’re planning to cheer on the runners, make sure you bring plenty of layers with you. Although temperatures in Madeira in September reach an average of 25 degrees celsius, the peaks are so high that it can get very chilly at the top.
