Known for its towering jagged peaks and its plunging valleys, the Madeira Island Ultra Trail is an 85-kilometre race through the Atlantic island’s diverse landscape. With peaks reaching in the region of 2,000 metres, the course starts at the volcanic lava pools of Porto Moniz. From there, it’s a gradual gruelling ascent up to the stunning summit of Pico de Areiro to really test your leg strength. The route home is a downwards run via the breathtaking Machico Valley. Whether you’re coming to participate in the race or to cheer on the runners, you’ll certainly have lots of amazing natural sights awaiting you in Madeira.
The Ultra Trail takes place on Saturday 22nd April 2017 by the natural rock pools of Porto Moniz. Make sure you’re in Madeira by Wednesday 19th, however, as you’ll need to check in and register. Thursday sees the all-important Pasta Party which is a great chance to meet your fellow runners or spectators as well as to stock up on some carbohydrate fuel. If you’d like to register for the Ultra Trail, you can do so here. It’s best to register sooner rather than later as the fee rises as time goes on. The cost starts at €80 and then rises to €250 if you wait until the last minute.
The Ultra Trail started with a group of runners who made it their goal to run from one end of the island to the other within 24 hours. From those beginnings, runners from overseas began to make their way to the island to attempt the challenge and eventually the race was chosen to be included in the National Ultra Trail Circuit. Please note that as the Madeira Island Ultra Trail is accredited by the International Trail Running Association (‘ITRA’), you need to have attained at least two ITRA points in order to enter the race.
