About the London to Brighton Bike Ride

Each year thousands of cyclists take part in the annual charity bike ride. Starting in London on Clapham common and ending on Brighton seafront, the route covers a total of 54 miles. Once the ride has left London it takes on scenic country lanes, including amazing views from the top of the South Downs. The London to Brighton Bike Ride first took place in 1974 and has raised over £107m for charities such as its main charity, the British Heart Foundation.  In 2014 a record number of cyclists took part, with an estimation of over 30,000 riders at the starting line.

If you are taking part in the ride, or want to see the start then arrive at Clapham Common for around 6am. Clapham Common is accessible via all public transport. If you are travelling from oversees the London airports are also the closest to Brighton. Travelling between London and Brighton by train is only an hour journey. The finish line on Brighton seafront is near to the main areas of the city. Taking part costs £40 registration, which includes lunch, mechanical support, route map, a medal and more.  In order to qualify you are also expected to raise a minimum of just £150 for charity.

Making the most of the London to Brighton Bike Ride

The distance of the ride means you need to be physically fit to compete, although all abilities are welcome as this is not a competitive race. Age restrictions are 16 and over, with no upper age limit. Ensure you bring your own bike, or if not convenient check where you can hire one locally. Dress appropriately and drink plenty of fluids, although water stops are available on route. Remember it’s an early start so plan how you are reaching the event in advance. Have fun and most importantly ask friends and family to sponsor you to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation, or your chosen charity.
