Held just a few days after its Paris namesake, Lisbon Fashion Week is a firm fixture on the global fashion calendar. Known in Portugal as ModaLisboa, this large-scale event has showcased the most innovative designers on Portuguese soil since 1991, making it one of the very first independent fashion weeks. Taking place in the breathtaking terrace of Lisbon’s former Royal Palace, Pátio da Galé, ModaLisboa gives centre stage to the city’s budding young talents in a special show entitled Sangue Novo, or New Blood. As well as the runway shows, you can expect talks, discussions on the state of the fashion industry and photography exhibitions.
ModaLisboa takes place from 9th March to 12th March 2017 in the palatial surroundings of Páteo da Galé in the Praça do Comércio. You can buy tickets online from the official website. If you’d like to attend the event, your nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport. From there, take the metro to Terreiro do Paço, Cais do Sodre, Rossio or Baixa-Chiado. As the huge square is one of the city’s main transport hubs, you can also take tram number 28 or buses 728, 737 and 735 amongst others.
Being one of Europe’s original fashion weeks, ModaLisboa has an air of prestige about it and this isn’t just down to the fact that it’s held in a former Royal Palace. Its glamour routinely attracts around 20,000 visitors and VIPs to view the premieres taking place on its runways. Designers who have graced its catwalks include Kenzo, Mary Quant and Christian Louboutin. Although clothing is of course the main focus of this four-day festival of Portuguese glamour, you’ll also discover the movers and shakers in the worlds of make-up and hair design. If you’d like to immerse yourself fully, make sure you attend the exhibitions that accompany the event too.
