About Leeds International Film Festival

Leeds International Film Festival is a large showcase of over 300 films in 30 different venues across the Northern city of Leeds. The largest film festival in England, excluding London, this event is renowned for showing quality screenings of a wide variety of films from all over the globe. It’s a particularly fitting city in which to have such a well-attended festival - Frenchman Louis le Prince shot the world’s first ever moving images in Leeds back in 1888. The festival has five categories of movie: Official Selection (widely-anticipated critically acclaimed films), Retrospective (a range of classics), Cinema Versa (documentary films), Fanomenon (the popular cult and fantasy genres) and Short Film City (short films). The festival is also a qualifying festival for the Oscars and winners in Leeds have gone to have success in festivals such as Cannes and Berlin.
