Hosting a varied selection of exciting jazz events in the grand surroundings of the Gulbenkian amphitheatre, Jazz in August returns to Lisbon. Taking place in one of the city’s best places to relax and take in some jazz, the Gulbenkian Gardens’ open-air amphitheatre on the site of the former Spanish Embassy, the Jazz in August series features daily concerts from some of the genre’s most talented musicians. Last year, pianist Eve Risser and guitarist Marc Ribot thrilled the audience with their compositions so expect an equally scintillating line-up for 2017. Also on offer are conferences and films screenings.
Jazz in August takes place throughout the beginning of August in the Gulbenkian Museum in central Lisbon. The outdoor concerts take place daily from 9.30pm with the indoor conferences and films beginning around 6.30pm. You can access the programme and buy tickets from the official website with prices ranging from between €7 to €20. The venue is located next to the Praça de Espanha square on Avenida de Berna in the city centre. To get there by metro, take either the red or the blue line to the S. Sebastião station. Alternatively, you can take any of the 716, 718, 726 or 742 buses.
Although the open-air amphitheatre has a capacity of around 1,000, this established music festival is extremely popular and so we’d recommend booking your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Alongside summer festival Out Jazz, Jazz in August ensures that Lisbon is one of Europe’s most jazz-orientated countries. Now in its 34th year, this particular event has had plenty of experience in curating programmes featuring established international artists as well as spotting emerging talents and bringing them to an audience of jazz lovers. The Gulbenkian has seen a wide selection of artists from Scandinavia to Canada grace its stages over the years in a programme that never disappoints.
