The Invictus Games are held in honour of those injured, physically or mentally, while serving their country in the armed forces. All athletes are either current or former military. The events take place in a similar format to that of the Paralympics. Sports involve a wide range of track and field events, wheelchair basketball, swimming, archery and much more. The first games took place in London, 2014. They were instigated by Prince Harry of the British Royal Family following a trip to the US Warrior Games. The motto for the games “I am” takes inspiration from the William Ernest quote “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul”.
The two main international airports closest to the events are Toronto City Airport and Toronto Pearson International. Getting around the city is easiest via public transport or on foot, although it is not recommended to hire a car to the games unless you are taking part. Check the website for details on how to compete, if you have been injured working in the forces and are eligible. Tickets will be available for spectators and go on sale from the summer months prior to the games. The majority of events will take place at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre or the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.
If you’re inspired to take part in the games, having been injured in the forces yourself, contact your nation’s representatives directly. There are also opportunities to volunteer or become a sponsor. As a spectator check the website for which venue is holding the sports/athletics you wish to attend. If you know someone competing, take advantage of the Friends and Family Program to show your support and potentially gain free entry. Look into the schedule of events and plan your trip accordingly. Read about the alternative rules, or watch footage of the previous games.
