The Edinburgh International Book Festival is an annual literacy event, held each year in Charlotte Square. The gardens in the city centre are transformed into a temporary festival village created especially for the event. It is believed to be one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, featuring around 800 authors across 700 events. The festival attracts readers and writers from novelists, poets, scientists and comic book writer in a diverse range of talks and events. Previous festivals have also featured Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and Booker prize winner Daniel Hahn.

Edinburgh has its own international airport half an hour away from the festival, or you can arrive by train into the city. Charlotte Square is in the heart of the city centre and is only a short walk from the main Princes Street shopping area.  Entrance to Charlotte Square gardens is free, with various cafes and book shops, writing areas and theatres available on site. The day events run into the evening throughout the festival, with prices for specific talks and discussions varying so always best to check the website for details.
