Held in the iconic courtyard of one of London’s best-loved venues, Film4 Summer is a series of film showings featuring the best of classic and contemporary movies. For two weeks every summer, Somerset House is transformed into a starry-skied open-air cinema in which Film4 presents a programme of top cinematic entertainment. You’ll see everything from cult arthouse films to thrillers, comedies to musicals at this expertly-curated event. Premieres are also held here - Pedro Almodovar attended the first showing of his film ‘Julieta’ at last year’s event. If you like your cinema, you’ll love this unique Somerset House experience!
This event is extremely popular and often sells out so make sure you book your tickets well in advance. You can book your tickets via the official website. Somerset House is very centrally located and is therefore very easy to get to. It’s a short walk from any of the following underground stations: Embankment, Temple, Charing Cross and Covent Garden. It’s also just a 10 to 12-minute walk from the following overground stations: Charing Cross, Blackfriars and Waterloo. You can use the Transport for London Journey Planner to find out the best way to get to Somerset House for any location.
In addition to watching some of the best films ever made - Jackie Brown, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Trainspotting and Girlhood were all screened last year - one of the highlights of the Film4 Summer Screen is bringing your own picnic with you and enjoying it under the stars with your friends. To warm you up for the event, there are early evening DJ sessions for you to enjoy while you eat, making this the perfect chilled-out summer event. Also available last year, and likely to make a 2017 comeback, is the Print Club screen-printing area where can get your hands on some hand-printed film posters.
