Festa di San Marco

25th April 2018 | St. Mark’s Square, Venice, Italy

About the Festa di San Marco

One of the most important celebrations in Venice, the Feast of Saint Mark honours the city’s Patron Saint with a religious procession to the Basilica. The day commemorates the arrival of the remains of the saint from Egypt, smuggled to the city by two Venetian merchants. The day is also known as the rosebud festival and is a time when men traditionally give a rosebud to the woman who has captured their heart. The Venetians celebrate with a Mass in the morning followed by a street party which goes on to the early hours of the next day. There is also a competitive boat race, the Regata di Traghetti, with gondolas racing to St. Mark’s Pier.

Making the most of the Festa di San Marco

The romantic tradition of giving a rosebud to the woman you love stems from a tale from the eighth century. As the legend goes, a working class man fell in love with a woman from the aristocracy. In order to impress her father, he went to war in a foreign land. He was seriously wounded and, as he lay dying, he managed to pick a single rosebud for his true love which he entrusted his friend to deliver to the noblewoman. In honour of this act, Venetian men traditionally give a single stem to their women on 25th April.
