With Italy being the spiritual home of the Roman Catholic Church, it would not be possible to visit Rome during lent without celebrating Saint Joseph.  As per the story of the bible, St Joseph was the husband to the Virgin Mary, believed to be mother to Lord Jesus Christ.  Traditionally it is a day to give food to the poor, but also a coming together with family as the Feast Day of Saint Joseph is jointly celebrated as Father’s Day. This reference is also very prominent in the Pope’s speech when holding mass in front of 80,000 onlookers, using the Saint as an inspiring figure.

The nearest airports to Rome are Ciampino Airport and Fiumicino Airport, both of which are no more than 45 minutes to Termini train station, a short walk from Vatican City.  Although celebrated throughout Italy as part of lent, the capital in particular attracts large numbers during the build up to Easter.  Whilst Vatican City is a sovereign state there are no border restrictions.  For those of religious believes it is an important date on the calendar, entrance to the Vatican is free, however there will be charges to the museums and other aspects.
