Each year in the grounds of Sophia Gardens, the Everyman Theatre Company hold a series of outdoor productions.  During the months of June and July the public park is transformed into its own theatre. With a different show on rotation every 7 to 10 days there’s plenty of time to choose when to visit. Previous productions have included the classic Romeo and Juliet, a stage show of the popular ‘80s TV comedy ‘Allo ‘Allo and children fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

Sophia Gardens is easily accessible, located a mile from Cardiff Central Station. Cardiff Airport is only half an hour away from the city centre and a regular bus service is available. Prices are normally no more than £20 and can be booked in advance online. The majority of performances starting at 8pm. Shows specifically aimed at children will finish early, with curtains drawing by 11pm for others. Check the calendar of events for any additional afternoon performances over the weekend. There is also a fully licensed bar on site, opening to the public at 6.30pm during evening shows.

Book in advance to get the best view as the pop-up theatre is allocated seating. With most shows being repeated on more than one day, you can decide which to attend depending on any other plans during your time away. The series of events are family friendly, with fairy tale productions specifically aimed at the younger audience members. Macbeth may have more graphic parts to the story, but every theatre goer should experience the Shakespeare classic. Arrive early to get a drink at the bar, plus food is available too. The outdoor theatre is undercover so will only be cancelled under severe adverse weather conditions.
