About Epiphany, Rome

Also known as the “Three Kings Day” the Epiphany is celebrated on the 12th day of Christmas, when it is believed Jesus Christ was introduced to the world.  It is an important date on the Gregorian calendar and as such is a public holiday in Italy, with Rome a central point of celebrations led by the Pope.  Whilst the 25th December is widely celebrated as the birth of Jesus, the 6th January is also treated of significant importance and when the Catholic Church acknowledges him being baptised by John the Baptist.

Ciampino Airport and the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, which are around a 45-minute journey into central Rome, are the nearest airports.  Whilst many businesses and shops remain closed on the 6th January there will be public services held in numerous Basilica’s (churches) most notably with the Pope holding mass in Vatican City.  Majority of private celebrations take place in the evening, however the Holy Mass within St Peter’s Basilica is held during the day from 10am in front of approximately 15,000 people.

Making the most of Epiphany, Rome

If you are of a religious faith, then this is one of the ideal dates to visit Rome and as such investigate in advance which of the many places of worship you wish to attend mass.  The Vatican is one of the city’s most popular tourist destination all year around, however even more so on dates such as the Epiphany.
