About the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Dates to be confirmed)

The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is an annual celebration of theatre, opera, classical music and ballet which takes place in over 70 venues in the city. The aim of the festival, when it started in the 1950s, was to fuse the baroque atmosphere of the city with Dubrovnik’s rich cultural talents by staging classical masterpieces in appropriate venues. The festival takes place at some of the city’s most stunning open-air venues, including the Franciscan monastery of St. Blaise, the Lazaretto and the Revelin Fort Terrace. Notable performances have included Debussy’s Prélude à L’Après-Midi d’un Faun on the Island of Lokrum and the Nordic Chamber Orchestra at the Rector’s Palace Atrium.

Making the most of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival

The festival is a highlight of Dubrovnik’s cultural calendar and locals and foreigners alike descend upon the city to attend some of these high-calibre performances and to watch the awards ceremony. One of the highlights of the 2016 festival was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Dubrovnik traditional dance known as Lindjo. Performed almost exclusively in Dubrovnik and the surrounding coastal region, this eighteenth century folklore is an energetic acrobatic display performed by dancers in traditional costumes. Accompanied by instrumentalists on a three-stringed banjo, the preservation of this ancient tradition is a source of pride for many locals.
