Days of Diocletian is a three-day event in the Croatian metropolis of Split celebrating the city’s rich Roman heritage with food and music of the era. The Roman Emperor Diocletian is synonymous with the city, its structure having grown out of Diocletian’s palace where he spent his final days. The palace, a magnificent fourth century building, is still standing and is the centrepiece for this vibrant Roman festival. The ev-ent features a re-enactment of the entrance of the emperor with the streets lined with residents as Diocletian and his troops parade through the city. The festival includes Roman sport such as ancient football, gladiator fights, live music and special events.
Days of Diocletian takes place at the end of August/beginning of September each year around the streets of Split. The opening night is a grand occasion during which Diocletian addresses his people in the main square and there are gladiator fights and fire-dancing in the city’s streets. The free event starts around 8.30pm and continues late into the night. Head to the Riva for the city’s Antique Fair which lasts throughout the festival.
