The international show jumping event has taken place in the city of Rome since 1922, making up part of the prestigious FEI Nations Cup. Originally conceived by Prince Marcantonio in the 18th century, the Piazza di Siena was built specifically with the equestrian event in mind. It has since become one of the most highly anticipated events on the horse-riding calendar outside of circuit racing. The rider with the most wins is the Italian Piero D’inzeo, whilst the current champion is USA born McClain Ward and his horse HH Azur.
The nearest airports to Rome are Ciampino Airport and the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, both of which are less than 45 minutes into the city. If you’re taking the train to Rome use the main Termini train station, buses serve the venue itself. Entry to the square for the occasion is free, which includes the village shop and dining areas. However, if you’re after a better view of the main event buy tickets for the Raphael Grandstand which are also available. Check prices nearer the time for either a day ticket or a pass for the whole weekend.
While watching the action is free, viewing places are limited so make the most of the occasion by purchasing a grandstand ticket. If you’re looking to make the day even more special, then upgrade to a VIP seat where you will also have closer access to the riders and horses along with the “Restaurant of the Knights”.
