The Óbidos Chocolate Festival is Portugal’s most famous celebration of all things chocolate. Held in the small town of Óbidos on the country’s west coast, this medieval walled town turns into a chocolate-lover’s paradise for a whole month each March. There are plenty of activities to help you to satisfy your cocoa craving, including workshops, classes, demonstrations and cooking competitions which will make you want to taste all of the entries. As usual representatives from the Portugal Cocktail Academy will present their own Choco-Academy for the show, creating delicious cocktails based on the sweet stuff. Other activities include theatre performances, talks and live music.
The small town of Óbidos is about an hour’s bus ride north of the capital, so if you’d like to attend the month-long chocolate festival, the nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport to which there are regular flights from most European cities. From Lisbon, take the airport bus to Avenida do Brasil and change to catch an hourly bus to Óbidos. The opening times of the festival vary slightly depending on the day but are generally between 10am and 8pm. You can buy tickets via online ticket service BOL or on the door for approximately €6 with discounts available for children, groups and students.
2018 sees the sixteenth anniversary of Óbidos Chocolate Festival so get ready for some extra-special activities to mark the occasion. One thing is for certain - there’ll be plenty to do, and taste, for the whole family. If you’re planning to attend the festival with your children, why not enrol the kids in the Kids Cooking afternoon. For just €5, your children can get their hands dirty making mouth-watering delicacies, such as chocolate fish or chocolate pizza. For kids aged between 3 and 11 this is one tasty and fun class they’re bound to enjoy.
