Featuring over 300 of the world’s top cinematic masterpieces, the BFI London Film Festival is a must-attend event for any film buff. Held across a variety of venues in the capital, including the BFI headquarters in Southbank and the stylish Ciné Lumière, the UK’s biggest film festival regularly features world premiere screenings as well as independent movies you may not be able to see elsewhere. A major highlight of the festival is the opportunity to attend the Q&A sessions which often accompany the film showing - a rare chance to interact with a film’s director and cast. Also featuring a star-studded opening gala and awards ceremony, notable attendees have included Michael Fassbender, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth.
The 2017 film festival is held over a 12-day period during the second half of October and screenings usually take place in 15 cinemas across the capital. To help you decide which films to see, a full programme of the showings is published on the official website in advance of the festival. The films are also divided by categories such as ‘Sonic’ - featuring music-inspired films - and ‘Dare’ - films which remove you from your comfort zone. Due to its renowned programming, the film festival regularly sells out so we would recommend booking your tickets as early as possible. Please check out the Transport for London Journey Planner to organise your trip to any of the venues.
Watch a great film, attend a Q&A with the cast and director and then go to a festival after-party - this would certainly count as a great night out for any film-lover. Come to the BFI London Film Festival and your wish will be granted. Last year’s Q&As/interviews included Dutch legend Paul Verhoeven, controversial Brit Ben Wheatley and on-screen stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. The party continues downstairs at Southbank’s Benugo Bar & Kitchen with a range of free music events, featuring live bands and DJs.
