Founded in 2004 by DJ Rob da Bank, Bestival is a popular four-day independent alternative music festival. A spin-off from his Sunday Best club nights in Camden, Bestival retains the same non-corporate, innovative feel. Attracting 140,000 revellers in 2017, Bestival has a good mix of alternative and mainstream acts. Florence & the Machine, Duran Duran, Missy Elliott and Tame Impala have all played there. There’s also plenty happening away from the main stages - there’s an inflatable church where couples can get married, gong meditation sessions and plenty of vegetarian food to keep you going all weekend.
Having been held at its spiritual home on the Isle of Wight, organisers confirmed in December 2016 the festival would be relocating to the Lulworth Estate in Dorset as of 2017 onwards.
The new home of Bestival in Dorset can be reached from London by coach or via trains from Wool and Wareham. By air it is still easiest to fly into Bournemouth and Southampton airports, although easily reachable from those in London. You can travel by car, with either onsite parking at £16.50 or check for park and ride schemes. Weekend tickets cost £184.50 for adults, £121.80 for children and under 12s go free. There are various upgrades available, along with payment plan options and VIP passes. Stage times will be announced nearer the time but expect an early start and late finish.
Take advantage of the payment plan to spread the cost and book early as this event sells out quickly. Check the festival line-up and plan who you wish to see, check the official site for further announcements. If you step away from the music take part in meditation classes, a spot of shopping and family entertainment, enjoy a wide variety of festival food or even get married on the inflatable church. Bestival has a fancy-dress theme each year so dress in keeping with everyone else, or just remember sensible clothing for the unpredictable festival weather.
While your ticket includes camping, make the most of your weekend by booking a house, apartment, Bed and Breakfast or any other private rental close to the Lulworth Estate. Wherever you decide to stay or not there will be additional transport during festival weekend. Check our accommodation in Dorset.
The site of Lulworth Estate and Castle is worth a visit after the festival has been cleared away. Elsewhere walk along the cliffs to Lulworth Cove and the famous rock of Durdle Door for a relaxing time by the sea. Venture further afield to Monkey World, an animal sanctuary down the road in Wareham.
