Now in its 17th year, the Belfast Film Festival is a creative celebration of short and full-length, new and classic cinema. Unlike many festivals of its kind, this unique Belfast event prides itself on enhancing the viewer experience by showing ‘site-specific’ films. For example, ‘Jaws’ was screened in a disused swimming pool and ‘Cool Hand Luke’ was shown in Crumlin Road Gaol. The festival awards prizes for best documentary and best short film, the latter being open to emerging filmmakers across Ireland. Keep an eye on the festival website for a full list of films due to be screened during the 2017 festival.
The Belfast Film Festival takes place from 30th March to 8th April 2017 in various venues around Belfast. Although there are certain to be some surprise film-specific venues which will be announced closer to the festival dates, you’ll be able to catch films at the Queen’s Film Theatre, Movie House in Dublin Road and the Grand Opera House. You can even watch selected movies at Stormont Parliament Buildings and Billy Murray’s Gym. You can book tickets for the films via the festival website or at the venues themselves. If you’re planning to travel to Belfast for the film festival, the nearest airports are Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport.
The Belfast Film Festival certainly thinks outside of the box when it comes to curating its films and selecting its venues. With the focus firmly on user experience, the organisers have come up with some pleasingly creative ideas: one such marriage made in heaven was the showing of ‘La Traviata’ in the stunning St Anne’s Cathedral with the Northern Ireland Young Artists as accompaniment. Another was the screening of horror work of art ‘Suspiria’ while Italian guitar band Goblin provided a live soundtrack at the Waterfront. If you’re into film and great experiences, this is a must-visit film festival!
