Held on the city’s expansive inner lake, Alstervergnügen is one of Hamburg’s biggest inner city parties with live music, fireworks and over 500 performers lighting up the area. The four-day festival sees the city centre come alive with a huge fairground, various stages and plenty of food and drink stalls to fuel the festivities. The stages are spread out around the lake and feature rock, pop and classic tunes - a mixture that should suit just about everybody. The fun isn’t only on the shore either - there’s plenty going on in the water itself, including wakeboarding, dragon boat racing and Stand up Paddling.
The Alstervergnügen summer party takes place on the Inner Alster Lake - one of two large man-made lakes located in the centre of Hamburg. The festivities occur during the first weekend of September. Head to the Hamburg City Tourism Website to view the full programme of activities taking place during the 2017 event. One of the best-loved aspects of Alstervergnügen is the fireworks which always start from 10pm each evening. If you’d like to attend Alstervergnügen, the nearest station is Jungfernstieg which is easily accessible by S-Bahn overground, U-Bahn underground and by bus.
One of the best ways to see the fireworks is to take a boat trip and admire the show from the lake. The musical pyrotechnic display will see over 1,300 fireworks go off each night, lighting up the whole city. During the day, the lakeside market is a real highlight. Not only can you sample some of Germany’s most famous dishes - including currywurst, schnitzel and Spätzle, but you can also bag yourself some new clothes and handmade accessories from some of Hamburg’s brightest young designers.
