London Fashion Week this February was, as ever, diverse, colourful and vibrant, bringing London’s Somerset House alive. The atmosphere in London around Fashion Week is always palpable, with model agencies, international buyers and fashion insiders bustling about. The bars and restaurants are always packed and accommodation – especially hotels and B&Bs is full to brimming! It’s a strange dichotomy of enjoyment and extreme stress! Perhaps that’s what they call adrenaline?
Samantha Cameron does fashion
Interestingly, AW11 was kicked off by Samantha Cameron in her new role as Ambassador for the British Fashion Council. This signals the fashion world’s recent attempts to distance themselves from the more traditional stereotype of women being treated as vapid clotheshorses. Samantha Cameron is perfect for the role because she is intelligent, fashionable, but still a real woman.
Temperley London returns
This Fashion Week also saw the re-introduction of Temperley London to the catwalks. Previously, contrastingly to what the name suggests, the Fashion House has chosen to display its collections in New York. However, their impressive collection was warmly welcomed back. The garments nod towards the up-coming trend for crisp white dresses and block sandals – very reminiscent of Summer in Ibiza!
Balloon Hats!
We thought Louise Gray’s playful collection of balloon hats that opened London Fashion Week captured the spirit of things perfectly! In the same way that Samatha Cameron is now the BFC’s Ambassador, fashion is no longer taking itself too seriously. For now, anyway! Perhaps Louise Gray has heard about the Eventful Stays logo?!
Digital Media
Also loved the BFC’s use of digital media to reach a wider audience this year. Their constant tweets really struck a chord with me as our Twitter and Facebook accounts have started to take off and I also heard that they were showing clips on the tube. Most impressive, perhaps, was that the Burberry Prorsum collection was live streamed on the famous screen in Piccadilly Circus! Bringing fashion to the masses, whether they like it or not!
My personal one to watch: Tatty Devine’s new collection of Jewellery. As quirky as ever!
