The Yorkshire Dales is a series of hills and valleys spread across the Pennine mountain range in the North of England. The ‘Dales’, derived from the old Germanic word for ‘valley’, are an area of great natural beauty and welcome around 8 million visitors annually. Many of those come to take on the 24-mile challenge of the Three Peaks hike, stroll along the more gentle routes of Ribblehead or explore the underground treasures of the region’s famous limestone caves. Most of the area now forms part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is as popular amongst cyclists exploring the heather-covered moorland landscape as it is amongst drivers out to discover the region’s historic market towns. Make sure you sample some of the fine Wensleydale cheese and the area’s famous beer while you’re there.
The Yorkshire Dales are easy to access by various methods of transport. If you’re travelling by train, try to take the line between Leeds and Carlisle which runs straight through the National Park and offers wonderful views of its hills and valleys. You can alight at any of the many stations within the Dales, including Settle, Penrith and Skipton. Alternatively, you can take a Megabus or National Express coach from any major UK city. For international visitors, Leeds Bradford and Manchester are the nearest airports or you can take a ferry to Hull.
A useful place for your first stop upon reaching the Dales is the one of the five National Park Centres. They can provide you with maps, useful information, GPS hire and general advice about navigating the area.
