Westminster Abbey

About Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a fascinating, mainly Gothic structure in the heart of London and has been the Coronation Church for the British monarch since 1066. The Abbey houses the tombs of some great names from throughout British history. Sixteen royal weddings have taken place in the Abbey and its contents have been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since 1066, when William the Conqueror and Harold Godwinson were crowned, the coronations of English and British monarchs have been held there.

Since 1560, the building is no longer an abbey or a cathedral, having instead the status of a Church of England "Royal Peculiar"—a church responsible directly to the sovereign.
