The Vatican, also known as Vatican City, is a sovereign state within the city of Rome and belongs to the Catholic Church. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world, coming under the jurisdiction of the pope it attracts visitors of all faiths and beliefs all year around. Although it is a sovereign state there are no border controls to enter from elsewhere in Rome, nearest airports are Ciampino and Fiumicino (both approx. 30km away). Entrance to the Vatican itself is free, whilst the museum and other aspects such as St Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel may include an entrance fee.

The Pope addresses the masses on a Wednesday and Sunday, however you will need to book well in advance if you wish to attend. Likewise, if you wish to visit the museums or Sistine Chapel it is best to search for deals online, as you can also find licensed tour guides offering combination tickets. Also as a mark of respect it is worth investigating dress codes, as not to be turned away at the gate.
